A thyroid ultrasound looks primarily at the thyroid gland, but the salivary glands or neck on either side may also be visualized if requested by your doctor.
What is the preparation?
There is no preparation for a thyroid gland ultrasound. We ask that you wear a shirt where the neck area can be unbuttoned, a crew neck or V-neck shirt. No turtlenecks or necklaces please.
What will the sonographer do?
For this exam, you will be asked to lie on a table on your back with your neck exposed. An odourless, water-soluble gel will be applied to the skin. This gel helps to transmit sound waves and ensures proper contact in order to produce quality images. The gel also helps to glide the probe over the skin for maximum comfort while taking images.
This exam lasts approximately 30 minutes
